Wells

Tagging & Groups

Organize wells with color-coded tags and user groups in PetroBench. Create tags, assign them in bulk, merge duplicates, and use groups to manage team access.

Tags and groups are two ways to organize wells in PetroBench. Tags are flexible, color-coded labels you apply to wells, simulations, and files. Groups are admin-managed teams that control which users can access which wells.

Tags

Tags are custom labels with a name and color. Use them to categorize wells by completion type, project phase, priority, or any criteria your team needs.

Create a Tag

There are two ways to create a tag:

From the Tags management page:

  1. Go to Dashboard > Tags
  2. Click Create Tag
  3. Enter a name (up to 50 characters) and pick a color
  4. Click Create Tag

Inline from a well:

  1. Open any well's Details page
  2. Click Add tags... below the well name
  3. Type a name that does not match an existing tag
  4. Click Create "[name]" in the dropdown

The inline method creates the tag and applies it to the well in one step.

Apply Tags to a Well

  1. Open the well's Details page
  2. Click Add tags... below the well name
  3. Select a tag from the dropdown, or search by name
  4. The tag is applied immediately

To remove a tag, click the x on the tag pill.

Bulk Tagging

Apply or remove tags across multiple wells at once:

  1. Go to Wells
  2. Select wells using the checkboxes
  3. Choose Tag Selected Items from the bulk actions menu
  4. Select the tags to apply
  5. Click Apply Tags

To remove tags in bulk, choose Remove Tags from Selected Items instead.

Bulk tagging also works for simulations. Select simulations from the simulations table and follow the same steps.

Tags also appear as a column in the RodSim Simulations table, so you can see and assign tags directly from the simulations view.

Manage Tags

Go to Dashboard > Tags to see all tags in your organization. The table shows how many wells, simulations, and files each tag is applied to.

From the More menu on any tag row, you can:

ActionWhat it does
Edit TagChange the name or color
Merge TagCombine this tag into another. All associations transfer to the target tag and the source tag is deleted
Delete TagRemove the tag from all items and delete it permanently

View Tag Details

Click any tag row to see its detail page. This page shows:

  • Counts for tagged wells, simulations, and files
  • Tabbed views to browse, search, and filter each asset type
  • Option to remove individual items from the tag

Filter by Tags

Tags appear as a filter option in the wells table:

  1. Go to Wells
  2. Click Filter
  3. Select Tags
  4. Choose one or more tags to filter by

Groups

Groups organize users and wells into teams. Unlike tags, groups are tied to the organizational hierarchy (HQ, Division, Region) and control data access.

How Groups Work

  • A group contains users and wells
  • Users in a group can access the wells assigned to that group
  • Groups can be assigned to a region within your organization
  • Admins manage groups from the admin panel

View Your Groups

  1. Go to My Groups from the main menu
  2. You will see all groups you belong to, with user and well counts
  3. Click a group to see its wells and members

Create a Group

Only admins (HQ Admin, Division Admin, Region Admin) can create and manage groups.

  1. Go to Dashboard > User Groups (or navigate via a Region or Division)
  2. Click Create Group
  3. Enter a group name and optional description
  4. Search and assign members and wells
  5. Click Create Group

Manage Groups

From the groups table, admins can:

ActionWhat it does
EditChange name, description, assigned regions, users, and wells
Activate / DeactivateToggle group status. Deactivated groups lose access
Move to RegionReassign the group to a different region
Reassign UsersMove users from one group to another
DeleteRemove the group and all user assignments permanently

Bulk actions are available when selecting multiple groups using checkboxes.

Filter by Group

Groups appear as a filter option in the wells table:

  1. Go to Wells
  2. Click Filter
  3. Select Group
  4. Choose a group to see only its wells

Tags vs. Groups

Use tags when you need flexible, cross-cutting labels that any team member can apply. Examples: "High Priority", "Workover Candidate", "ESP Conversion".

Use groups when you need to control which team members can see and work with specific wells. Examples: organizing wells by field team, restricting contractors to a subset of wells.

Tags and groups work together. A well can have multiple tags and belong to a group at the same time. Use tags to filter within a group, or use groups to narrow down before filtering by tag.
